The Korean Council of University Student Councils (KCUSC) has urged the withdrawal of collective action by medical students who are opposed to the expansion of medical school admissions.
Expressing concerns over the collective action, the Korean Council of Churches called for its withdrawal.
In a statement released on the 14th, the KCUSC stated, “Despite the government’s long-term vision for physician supply and the opposition from the medical community, we deeply express our concerns regarding the news of a total strike and the government’s strong response,” and demanded the withdrawal of the collective action that puts the lives of the people at stake.”
The KCUSC evaluated the expansion of medical school admissions as an essential decision that has been discussed by successive governments and is a significant national issue that cannot be avoided. They stated that it is crucial for resolving regional disparities in healthcare, expanding public healthcare, guaranteeing the health rights of the people, and improving their quality of life.
The KCUSC further appealed to the government, stating, “Starting with the expansion of medical school admissions, we hope that the government will pursue long-term and systematic health and medical policies” and urged them to make every effort to create a healthcare environment where the lives of the people are protected as a priority in any situation.
They also pleaded with the medical community, saying, “We earnestly request that you cease the collective action and return to your essential duty of protecting lives and focusing on patient care.”
