The National Busan Gugak Center will be hosting a performance of ‘Saturday Shinmyeong’ by Gaya Geum master Kim Nam-soon on the 17th at 3 PM at the Gugak Center’s Yeji Hall in Busanjin-gu. Kim Nam-soon, a renowned Gaya Geum master, will showcase the ‘Kim Byeong-ho-style Gaya Geumsanjo.’ Gaya Geum Sanjo is a traditional solo instrumental piece that originated in the Jeolla Province in the 19th century, influenced by shamanic music called Sinawi and pansori storytelling.

Kim Byeong-ho-style Gaya Geumsanjo and Kim Nam-soon’s Performance

‘Kim Byeong-ho-style Gaya Geumsanjo,’ created by Kim Byeong-ho (1910-1968), is known as a Jeonnamje Sanjo, continuing the lineage of Kim Chang-jo. This Sanjo has unique characteristics compared to other Sanjo styles, requiring the use of joints and wrists in playing techniques and precise pitch control. Kim Nam-soon is renowned as a Gaya Geum master and has a career as a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada, the artistic director of the Asian Philosophy Society, and the director and artistic director of the Busan Gaya Geum Ensemble. Currently, he is active as the chairman of the Kim Byeong-ho Gaya Geumsanjo Research Association and an honorary professor at the Department of Korean Music at Busan National University.

The drum accompaniment for this performance will be performed by Kim Chang-man, a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Pansori Gobae.
