The Press Arbitration Commission has disclosed that internet-based media has a compliance rate of 65% for implementing corrective recommendations. This information comes after the commission issued recommendations for 1158 instances of press coverage that raised concerns about infringements on personal and social rights.
Among the cases, internet newspapers accounted for the majority, with 1007 cases (87.0%). In contrast, daily newspapers had a significantly lower proportion, with only 83 cases (7.2%).
The compliance rate for corrective recommendations among internet-based media, including telecommunications companies and internet newspapers, was found to be 65.1%. This rate applies to a total of 697 cases, with 41.2% involving article modifications and 23.9% involving article deletions.
The most common violation identified in the cases that received recommendations was related to “prohibition of discrimination,” accounting for 286 cases (24.7%). Many instances involved negative expressions in article titles, such as “blind money” or “suffering from disabilities.” Other violations included 270 cases (23.3%) related to “privacy protection” and 208 cases (18.0%) related to “suicide-related coverage.”
The Press Arbitration Commission positively evaluated the fact that approximately two-thirds of media outlets accepted the recommendations, indicating the effectiveness of the recommendation system in protecting the legal rights of the people. The commission emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and response to discriminatory expressions to further protect the rights of vulnerable groups.
The Press Arbitration Commission remains dedicated to its essential role in safeguarding the legal rights of the people. It plans to continue issuing corrective recommendations for press coverage that may potentially infringe upon personal and social rights.
