The Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, embarked on its highly anticipated maiden voyage from Miami on Saturday. This colossal ship, measuring an impressive 1,200 feet in length, is equivalent to four city blocks. With a staggering price tag of $2 billion, the Icon of the Seas boasts 20 decks and has the capacity to accommodate a whopping 7,600 passengers, along with a crew of 2,350.
The Icon of the Seas offers a range of remarkable amenities, including a 17,000 square feet water park with six water slides and seven swimming pools. Notably, the Royal Bay pool is the largest at sea, while the Absolute Zero ice skating rink is the grandest of its kind on a cruise ship. Additionally, the ship features a theater, carousel, over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges. Onboard entertainment includes performances by 50 musicians and comedians, and the ship even has a dog named Rover serving as the Chief Dog Officer.
The Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage entails a seven-day journey through the Eastern Caribbean, and it is already fully booked. Since the ship’s deployment was announced in October 2022, it has broken Royal Caribbean’s record for the highest number of reservations. The ship offers a diverse range of accommodation options to suit various tastes and budgets, starting from the basic 157-square-foot interior cabins for two people, priced at $3,600 per week, to luxurious three-story Ultimate Family Townhouses that can accommodate up to eight people, with an average cost of $100,000 per week.
Built in Turku, Finland, the Icon of the Seas surpasses the previous record set by Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas. It operates on six dual-fuel engines powered by liquefied natural gas, contributing to reduced emissions and greenhouse gases, although concerns about potential methane emissions have been raised. The ship’s naming ceremony, hosted by Mario Lopez, featured the presence of renowned soccer star Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates, adding to the ship’s already substantial reputation.
With its astonishing size, luxurious amenities, and captivating entertainment services, the Icon of the Seas promises to redefine the standards of the cruise industry. This extraordinary cruise ship is poised to create a new era of maritime experiences, captivating travelers worldwide.
