Recent sightings at Camp Humphreys reveal the deployment of three RC-12X “Guardrail” surveillance planes within a one-hour interval. These aircraft, operated by the US 8th Army’s 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, specialize in signal intelligence (SIGINT) collection. They are tasked with monitoring North Korea’s missile preparations, communications, as well as conducting border surveillance and reconnaissance activities.

Addressing North Korea’s Missile Tests and War Threats

The deployment of RC-12X planes at Camp Humphreys is a direct response to North Korea’s continuous missile experiments and heightened war threats. This is not the first time such surveillance measures have been taken. In April 2020, when concerns arose about Kim Jong-un’s health, three RC-12X aircraft were dispatched to closely monitor the situation. The recent flight operations hold significant importance, particularly in light of North Korea’s recent test launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) using solid-fuel propulsion.

Collaborative Monitoring Efforts with the US Air Force

Alongside the RC-12X aircraft stationed at Camp Humphreys, the US Air Force’s RC-135V “Rivet Joint” electronic surveillance planes have also been deployed in Okinawa, Japan, for aerial monitoring activities over the Korean Peninsula. This collaborative effort between the US military branches demonstrates a strong commitment to closely monitor North Korean activities.
