The South Korean theater community is gearing up for the 8th edition of the ‘Neulpureun Theater Festival,’ organized by esteemed veterans in the field. Under the slogan ‘Back to Theater,’ this festival aims to bring together prominent directors, playwrights, and actors to showcase their works.

The festival will take place on June 6th at the Mary Hall of Sogang University in Seoul. It will feature the works of renowned figures such as director Kim Sam-il, playwright Lee Hyun-hwa, and actors Baek Su-ryeon, Yoon Moon-sik, Choi Ju-bong, and Lee Seung-ho.

Kim Sam-il: A Prominent Director from Pohang

Director Kim Sam-il, hailing from Pohang, has made significant contributions to the theater industry. He has received numerous accolades, including the National Theater Festival President’s Award, the Lee Hae-rang Theater Award, the Hong Haesung Theater Award, and the Proud Theater Artist of South Korea Award. His latest work, Lee Man-hee’s play ‘Crossing the Hill,’ is scheduled to be performed on June 6th and 7th.

Baek Su-ryeon: A Veteran Actress with a Dazzling Career

Debuting in 1958, Baek Su-ryeon has established herself as a versatile actress, excelling in both dramas and films. During the 1970s and 1980s, she was an active member of the National Theater Company, known for her warm and charismatic performances. Despite suffering an ankle injury during rehearsals, Baek Su-ryeon’s determination shines as she takes on the role in the play ‘Bimok’ from June 10th to 14th, performing on stage in a wheelchair.

Yoon Moon-sik, Choi Ju-bong, and Lee Seung-ho: A Stellar Cast in ‘Junkyard Blues’

From June 18th to 21st, Yoon Moon-sik, Choi Ju-bong, and Lee Seung-ho will join forces in the play ‘Junkyard Blues,’ written by Kim Sang-yeol and directed by Ju Ho-seong. Yoon Moon-sik, who made his debut in 1969, has been a prominent figure in the theater industry, specializing in outdoor and musical performances. Choi Ju-bong, widely known for his humorous and enchanting acting, is also celebrated for his exceptional singing abilities. Lee Seung-ho, a legendary actor in the experimental theater scene, has gained acclaim for his roles in long-running productions such as ‘Equus,’ ‘Ireland,’ and ‘Amadeus.’

Lee Hyun-hwa: A Maverick Playwright

Playwright Lee Hyun-hwa is known for constructing a unique world of unconventional and brutal works. Since her debut in 1970, she has been honored with numerous awards, including the Korean Theater Film Art Award, the Modern Literature Award, the Korean Theater Festival Playwright Award, the Dong-A Theater Award for Playwriting, the Baeksang Arts Award for Playwriting, and the Grand Prize. Her play ‘Who Are You?’ written by herself and directed by Park Seung-won, will be performed from June 24th to 28th.
