2023 Performing Arts Creation Studio New Works: A Diverse Showcase of Artistic Excellence

The Korean Culture and Arts Council has unveiled the selection of six new works for the ‘2023 Performing Arts Creation Studio New Works’ program. These works span various genres, including theater, music, creative opera, and traditional arts, offering a vibrant and diverse range of artistic expressions.

Selected Works

Among the chosen productions is the play ‘Barry of the Hill,’ which portrays the life of female independence activist An Gyeong-sin. This compelling work will be performed at the Daegukjeongno Arts Theater from the 6th to the 14th of the month. ‘Barry of the Hill’ weaves together the stories of Barrydegi and An Gyeong-sin, alternating between dreams and reality.

Another captivating performance is ‘Minyo Cello’ by Im Ihwan, where Korean folk songs are reimagined with the accompaniment of five cellos and a band. This enchanting reinterpretation will take place at the Arko Arts Theater Grand Theater on the 6th.

The Ulsan Moonsoo Opera Group will present ‘3 and 2/3 A,’ an opera that reconstructs the story of Cinderella. Audiences can enjoy this imaginative production at the National Theater Sky Theater on the 11th and 12th.

La Pola Art Research Institute will mesmerize spectators with their traditional arts performance titled ‘Manjungsakman – Memories of Forgotten Breaths.’ This musical journey into an era where footsteps set the rhythm will captivate audiences at the Arko Arts Theater Small Theater on the 12th and 13th.

The play ‘To My Son (Subtitle: Alice Hyun Mi-ok)’ narrates the story of real-life figure Hyun Mi-ok and will be showcased at the Arko Arts Theater Grand Theater from the 13th to the 21st.

For those seeking a reinterpretation of traditional short plays, ‘Water Play’ will be a delightful experience. This unique production, inspired by water, can be enjoyed at the Daegukjeongno Arts Theater Small Theater on the 20th and 21st.

The ‘2023 Performing Arts Creation Studio New Works’ program, initiated by the Korean Culture and Arts Council, aims to discover outstanding creative works through annual support.
