Kimje City has announced that the Wallgolje Agricultural Museum will be hosting an exhibition titled “Gyu-bang, Women’s Space Stories” until April 28th next year. The exhibition aims to shed light on various everyday items used by women in their Gyu-bang (inner chambers) during the winter season.
The exhibition is divided into four parts. The first part explores the stories of Gyu-bang (inner chambers), while the second part focuses on the art of sewing. The third part delves into the practices of laundry and ironing, and the fourth part uncovers the world of sewing and tailoring.
Gyu-bang served as a space where the gathering and sensibilities of women during the Joseon Dynasty were expressed. It offers a glimpse into the refined and sophisticated culture of women at that time.
The Korean essay “Gyu-jung-chil-woo-jaeng-ron-gi” from the Joseon Dynasty mentions sewing tools. These tools, including needles, bobbins, scissors, thimbles, irons, thread, and measuring tapes, were satirically depicted in the essay, representing the social fabric of that era.
A representative from Kimje City expressed the hope that through this exhibition, unique artifacts used in the Gyu-bang will be explored, and the historical and cultural value will be shared with the public.
The Wallgolje Agricultural Museum is located in Kimje City, and the exhibition is organized by Kimje City. It aims to shed light on everyday items used by women in their Gyu-bang and shares the historical and cultural value.
