The ruling party and the opposition party engaged in heated debates to pass the controversial ‘김건희 특검법’ and ‘대장동 50억 클럽 특검법’ in the National Assembly. These bills, collectively known as the ‘Double Special Prosecutor’s Law,’ were individually processed during the plenary session on October 28th.
The ruling party, led by Representative Yoon Jae-ok, held a protest rally outside the meeting room, condemning the ‘김건희 특검법’ as a law aimed at manipulating public opinion for the upcoming general elections. On the other hand, the opposition party criticized the ruling party’s handling of the bills, arguing that they are necessary to investigate allegations of stock manipulation involving Kim Gun-hee and the bribery case of the ‘대장동 50억 클럽’.
Immediately after the passage of the ‘김건희 특검법,’ Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol announced his intention to exercise his veto power once the bill is transferred to the government. This is the first time Yoon has explicitly expressed his veto intention immediately after a bill’s passage. He has previously exercised his veto power three times this year.
As the ‘김건희 특검법’ approaches the upcoming general elections, concerns are growing about its impact on public opinion. Ruling party members protested and left the voting session, while opposition party members unanimously supported the special prosecutor’s law. The ‘김건희 특검법’ passed with 180 votes in favor out of 180 seats, and the ‘대장동 50억 클럽 특검법’ passed with 181 votes in favor out of 181 seats.
The passage of the bills has intensified the confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties. Both sides accuse each other of using the bills for political gain. The ruling party argues that rejecting the special prosecutor’s law goes against the will of the people, while the opposition party criticizes the bills as laws intended to manipulate public opinion for the upcoming general elections.
With the passage of the ‘이중 특검법,’ the focus now shifts to Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol’s exercise of veto power. With the general elections only 104 days away, the controversy surrounding the special prosecutor’s law is expected to remain a crucial issue in shaping the political landscape for the coming months.
