South Korean Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Yu In-chon, is currently undertaking a ‘local’ campaign tour to shed light on the city of Miryang. The tour aims to promote local culture, tourism, and sports, while engaging with the community and highlighting the region’s unique attractions.
As part of the campaign, Minister Yu In-chon participated in the vibrant ‘Sae-Tteo Ga-eul Goodnori’ performance, a traditional folk dance celebrated in Miryang. The minister joined local residents, singing the Miryang Arirang song and dancing along to the traditional moves, creating a sense of unity and celebration.
Continuing the campaign, Minister Yu In-chon visited various cultural heritage sites in Miryang, including the Yeongnam Road bicycle path, which offers breathtaking views and the opportunity to explore charming villages along the river.
As the first participant in the ‘Local 100’ campaign, Minister Yu In-chon joined a group of young artists, both local and international, to explore Miryang’s diverse cultural heritage sites. ‘Local 100’ is a selection of 100 representative tangible and intangible cultural assets chosen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. Miryang’s Arirang Festival was among the selected events.
During the campaign tour, Minister Yu In-chon visited Miryanghangyo, a bridge where visitors are encouraged to greet locals with respect and courtesy. After paying his respects, the minister participated in the ‘Miryang Sae-Tteo Ga-eul Goodnori’ performance, a traditional folk play passed down through generations in the Sae-Tteo Village. He also experienced the culinary culture at Gyodong Milseong Sonssi Goga Jibseongchon, a historic house representing the region’s traditional cuisine.
The participation of Minister Yu In-chon brought a renewed sense of energy to the ‘Local’ campaign tour. Local residents eagerly gathered to take photos with the minister, expressing their excitement and appreciation for his visit to Miryang.
Continuing his tour, Minister Yu In-chon and a group of campaign participants embarked on a 30-minute bicycle ride along the Yeongnam Road cycling path. The minister emphasized the importance of creating cycling paths that connect small villages near rivers, rather than solely following the main river, to enhance the overall experience for cyclists.
Following the cycling tour, Minister Yu In-chon visited Yeongnam Pavilion, one of Korea’s three designated pavilions, and explored the revitalized Hae-sal Cultural Campus, which brings back the spirit of the old Miryang University.
During the ‘Miryang Cultural City Achievement Sharing Conference’ held at Hae-sal Cultural Campus, Minister Yu In-chon delivered a speech emphasizing the significance of culture, comparing it to the roots of a plant that takes 50 to 100 years to grow into a sturdy tree, capable of withstanding any storm.
The ‘Local 100’ campaign welcomes participation from individuals and organizations. Participants can share their visits to ‘Local 100’ locations by posting photos or videos on their personal or institutional YouTube and social media accounts, using hashtags such as #Local100, #Local, and the name of the visited place. Additionally, participants can nominate two friends to join the campaign, and 100 lucky winners will receive commemorative gifts related to ‘Local 100’.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in collaboration with KORAIL Tourism Development, has launched the ‘Local 100 Train Travel’ package and actively supports the ‘Local’ campaign. They have introduced a travel package that includes a visit to Miryang following the previous package to Shinan. The plan is to expand the package to all ‘Local 100’ locations by the end of 2024.
Minister Yu In-chon is scheduled to visit the ‘Tongyeong International Music Hall’ in Tongyeong on the following day. The music hall has been selected as part of the ‘Local 100’ campaign and will host the ‘Tongyeong International Music Festival’.
