North Korea’s commitment to denuclearization is receiving global attention as cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan intensifies. The national security authorities of the three countries have announced their determination to strictly implement North Korea’s obligations for denuclearization and prohibition of military cooperation, as outlined in the UN Security Council resolutions.

On December 9th, Jo Tae-yong, the Deputy Head of the National Security Office at the Blue House, revealed that the security officials from South Korea, the United States, and Japan have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in order to ensure the thorough implementation of North Korea’s denuclearization obligations and military cooperation prohibition. The announcement came after a trilateral meeting between Jo Tae-yong, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, and Akiba Takeo, the Director-General of the National Security Secretariat of Japan.

The security officials emphasized the importance of smooth security cooperation among the three countries. This includes real-time sharing of North Korean missile alert information and the establishment of long-term training plans. They also discussed the comprehensive and strategic aspects of trilateral cooperation, such as security, economy, and technology.

Jo Tae-yong expressed the commitment of the three countries to strengthen their cooperation in order to ensure the thorough implementation of North Korea’s denuclearization and military cooperation prohibition obligations. He also highlighted the need for prompt and effective implementation of the follow-up actions from the Camp David Summit, covering areas such as cyber economy, advanced technology development, supply chains, technology protection, joint research, artificial intelligence, governance, and economic security.

The security officials emphasized the importance of strong cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan in responding to global issues, such as the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. They pledged to uphold universal values, including democracy and human rights, and to safeguard a rules-based international order. Additionally, they committed to cooperating in countering disinformation campaigns and fake news originating from overseas.
