Kim Hwan-gi’s artwork from his New York era is set to be auctioned for approximately 7 billion won. The domestic art auction house, K Auction, will hold its final auction of the year featuring this valuable piece. The auction will take place on the 20th of this month at K Auction in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
One of the highlights of this auction is Kim Hwan-gi’s artwork from his New York period, titled ‘4-VI-69 #65’. The estimated price for this piece ranges from 750 million won to 2 billion won. Created in 1969 during a time when Kim Hwan-gi was exploring the concepts of dots, lines, and planes, this artwork reflects his artistic experimentation in New York. The composition of colors spreading from the corners of the divided screen evokes the deep monochromatic tones of Paris.
In addition to Kim Hwan-gi’s artwork, seven pieces by the late Park Seo-bo were also included in this auction. The pencil drawing ‘Maepyeong 213-85’ is estimated to be valued between 830 million won and 1.5 billion won. The perennial work ‘Maepyeong 010731’ is estimated to be valued between 380 million won and 600 million won. The collection also includes the artwork ‘Maepyeong 101104,’ consisting of over 300 red-toned pieces, with an estimated value of 500 million won to 1 billion won.
In the field of Korean traditional art, a total of 21 pieces, including celadon and white porcelain with various techniques and forms, were exhibited. Kim Ki-chang’s ‘Jukrim Chilhyeon’ is estimated to be valued between 50 million won and 70 million won, Jang Seung-yeop’s ‘Hwajo Youngmodo’ between 32 million won and 50 million won, and Byun Kwan-sik’s ‘Hagyeongsansu’ between 12 million won and 20 million won. Paintings such as ‘Seoan’ are estimated to be valued between 5 million won and 8 million won, and ‘Sabangtakja’ between 4 million won and 8 million won.
The exhibited artworks can be viewed at the K Auction exhibition hall from the 9th to the 20th of this month, during the auction period.
