Seoul City announced that the exhibition, titled “Until the Day We Meet Again: Commemorating the Designation of the ‘Day of Separated Families’,” will run from the 5th of this month until January 21st next year. The exhibition aims to raise awareness about the pain experienced by separated families and reflect on the efforts made to address this issue.
Out of the 113,970 applicants for family reunions, there are currently 49,990 survivors, with 65.8% of them aged 80 or older. The exhibition will shed light on the challenges faced by these elderly individuals, as well as the longing they feel to reunite with their loved ones.
The exhibition will feature a captivating collection of photographs and artifacts that tell the stories of separated families. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the joy of family reunions alongside the heart-wrenching moments of farewell. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the KBS special broadcast “Searching for Separated Families,” which will be commemorated through a display of touching stories and dramatic reunion scenes.
The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge, allowing everyone to engage with this important topic. Visitors can explore the exhibition from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and weekends, with the exception of Mondays and January 1st, when the museum will be closed. Seoul City hopes that this exhibition will serve as a catalyst for deeper contemplation on the issue of separated families, especially in the current context of strained North-South relations.
Seoul City’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by separated families extends beyond this exhibition. The city aims to identify and promote practical initiatives that can contribute to the resolution of this issue. By commemorating the “Day of Separated Families” through this exhibition, Seoul City seeks to foster empathy and understanding, ultimately working towards a future where families can be reunited.
