조계종 to Construct Buddhist Cultural Heritage Research Facility in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, Scheduled for Completion in 2024

조계종, 경기도 양평에 불교문화재연구시설 건립… 2024년 준공 예정

조계종, a major Buddhist sect in South Korea, has announced plans to construct a Buddhist cultural heritage research facility in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province. The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, named “불교문화재연구시설 상량식,” will take place on the 29th of this month in Gongheung-ri, Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province.

Construction and Facility Information

The Buddhist cultural heritage research facility will cover a land area of 5019㎡ (1518 pyeong) with a building area of 1889㎡ (1518 pyeong) and a total floor area of 6769㎡ (2048 pyeong). The facility will consist of two underground floors and two above-ground floors, housing facilities for preservation and conservation such as storage rooms, exhibition halls, archives, large-scale Buddhist paintings, metalwork, woodwork, and paper conservation.

Purpose and Plan

조계종 aims to preserve the value and original form of Buddhist cultural heritage, establish a traditional restoration and conservation system, and uphold traditional practices through this facility. The project seeks to achieve the restoration of Buddhist cultural heritage and is scheduled to be completed in October 2024.

Completion Ceremony and Location

The completion ceremony for the Buddhist cultural heritage research facility will be held in Gongheung-ri, Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province. The facility will be constructed according to the plans and initiatives of 조계종.
