Finland Closes Border Crossings to Control Immigration from Russia: Prime Minister

Finland has taken measures to close 4 out of 9 border crossings with Russia in order to prevent a sudden influx of immigrants from the Middle East and Africa, according to Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. He accuses the Kremlin of coordinating this influx as retaliation for Finland’s recent NATO membership.

Authorities in Finland believe that immigrants receive assistance and escort from border guards to reach Finland’s border. Since September, around 280 asylum seekers from Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Iraq have entered Finland through Russia, often by foot or bicycle.

The Finnish government emphasizes that this issue is not solely about the number of asylum seekers but also relates to Finland’s national security and Russia’s changing activities. The decision to join NATO, in response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, has further complicated the situation.

To curb the influx of asylum seekers, Finnish authorities have installed fences at the Nuijamaa border crossing point. Border guards are also transporting immigrants who arrive at the border just before the closure of the entry point.

European Union President Commends Finland’s Border Policy

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union, expresses support for Finland’s new border policy and criticizes Russia for exploiting immigrants. She acknowledges the efforts of Finland’s border guards in protecting European borders.

However, there is ongoing controversy surrounding the border closure decision. Russian nationalist protesters have gathered outside the Finnish parliament to oppose the decision. The Kremlin spokesperson condemns Finland’s actions as a harmful mistake that damages bilateral relations.

While most border crossings have been closed, two entry points in northern Finland will continue to accept asylum applications. The closed entry points will remain shut until February 18th. Finland is determined to handle the situation firmly in order to address national security concerns.
