Forty workers who were trapped in a tunnel collapse in northern India have been successfully rescued, although the operation was delayed due to technical challenges. The incident occurred in the Lakhnau region, where a part of the tunnel collapsed, leaving the workers stranded since Sunday. The rescue efforts were hindered by a faulty drilling machine and debris falling into the excavated channel, slowing down progress.
Rescue teams tirelessly worked to create a passage for the trapped workers by clearing the debris. To overcome the technical difficulties, additional powerful equipment was brought to the site and is currently being assembled. Despite the hardships, the isolated workers received essential supplies, including food, water, and medication, through a narrow passage. However, concerns were raised as some workers displayed symptoms of fever and body aches.
As the rescue operation faced obstacles, relatives and friends of the trapped workers gathered outside the tunnel, expressing their growing frustration and anger. Seeking guidance from experts with experience in similar operations, the Indian government consulted with professionals who successfully rescued a junior soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand back in 2018. They also sought assistance from the Norwegian Geological Institute.
About 200 disaster relief personnel, equipped with excavation machinery, participated in the rescue operation. Their plan involved inserting a 2.5-foot-wide steel pipe through the debris to create a passage for the trapped workers. The tunnel collapse was a result of a landslide during road construction in Uttarakhand, a mountainous region known for its Hindu temples that attract pilgrims and tourists. Despite the challenges, the construction of highways and buildings in the area continues to accommodate the influx of visitors.
The collapsed tunnel was part of the Char Dham All-Weather Road Project, aiming to connect various Hindu pilgrimage sites. Although the rescue operation faced difficulties, the national highway authorities remained determined to overcome the obstacles and successfully rescue the trapped workers. The incident garnered significant attention, and the delay in the rescue efforts highlighted the need for improved safety measures in construction projects.
