Collapsed Road Tunnel Traps 40 Workers in Northern India, Rescue Efforts Underway

A road tunnel in northern India has collapsed, leaving 40 workers trapped inside. The incident occurred in Uttarakhand, a mountainous region renowned for its Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites. The workers were participating in the construction project of the Char Dham all-weather road, a federal government initiative aimed at connecting various Hindu pilgrimage sites.

The collapsed tunnel, supervised by the Navayuga Construction Company, is located approximately 200 meters from the entrance of the 4.5km-long tunnel. This challenging position has posed additional difficulties for the ongoing rescue operation.

Rescue Efforts and Progress

Following the collapse, rescue operations promptly commenced, with authorities supplying trapped workers with essential provisions such as oxygen and water. The rescue team has made significant headway, reaching a depth of 15 meters inside the tunnel. However, they still face a remaining distance of 35 meters to reach the trapped workers.

A team of over 150 dedicated rescue workers equipped with excavation machinery is tirelessly working to clear the debris and create a safe passage for the trapped workers. Despite the arduous conditions, their determination and continuous efforts have instilled a sense of relief among the workers’ families.

Concerns and Previous Incidents

This unfortunate incident raises concerns about the safety of construction projects in mountainous regions. In January, Uttarakhand experienced a similar issue when ground subsidence led to the collapse of a temple and caused cracks in approximately 600 houses in the village of Joshimath and its surroundings. These incidents highlight the inherent risks associated with construction endeavors in such areas.

Continued Rescue Operation

The rescue operation in the collapsed road tunnel in northern India remains ongoing. The unwavering dedication of the rescue team, coupled with the support of the authorities, instills hope for a successful outcome despite the challenging circumstances.

As the rescue efforts persist, the trapped workers and their families anxiously await their safe extraction from the collapsed tunnel. Authorities and rescue workers continue to work tirelessly, employing their expertise and resources to ensure the well-being and rescue of the trapped individuals.
