2024 Hanbok Store: Where Tradition Meets Modernity

The Traditional Culture University and the National Heritage Promotion Institute are jointly organizing the ‘2024 Hanbok Store’ from September 9th to 12th at Seoul Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Art Hall. This event, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF), aims to showcase traditional hanbok and various crafts.

The Harmony of Tradition and Modernity

The ‘2024 Hanbok Store’ serves as a platform to connect consumers and the hanbok industry, bringing together hanbok artisans from across the country. The event features a special exhibition titled ‘Korean Mosi: Weaving and Making Mosi Clothes,’ organized by the Traditional Art and Craft Department and the Traditional Fiber Major of the Traditional Culture University.

The Beauty and Tradition of Mosi

This exhibition, a continuation of last year’s ‘2023 Hanbok Store,’ focuses on the traditional fabric ‘mosi,’ which has been beloved for its summer textiles. The exhibition showcases hand-woven mosi fabrics, traditional clothing, and creative works under the guidance of national intangible cultural heritage holders, professors, students, and graduates of the Traditional Fiber Major.

Appreciating the Elegance of Mosi

Visitors can admire the sophistication and refined beauty of mosi fabric, created using natural materials. The exhibition offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of Korea’s traditional fiber culture. Tickets can be purchased on-site for entry, providing a chance for visitors to experience the richness of Korean traditional fiber culture.

Love Room Booth and Engaging Programs

The National Heritage Promotion Institute has set up a booth called ‘Love Room’ featuring the works of intangible cultural heritage inheritors and modern craft artists. This space, designed as a ‘life photo’ location, specifically targets the main audience of the ‘2024 Hanbok Store’ – young people in their 20s and 30s.

Additionally, cultural products such as goods from the Royal Palace Culture Festival and the ‘Everyone’s Folk Customs’ series will be available for sale. Visitors can indulge in various products that allow them to experience Korean traditional culture. The event also offers a ‘Leather Cham (Traditional Sewing Tool) Making’ experience program, which takes place daily from 11 am to 3 pm. Participation in the program is possible after joining an Instagram follow event.

Creating Minhwa Fabric Pouches and Free Craft Experiences

During the exhibition period, a permanent experience program called ‘Minhwa Fabric Pouch Making’ will be available. This program, free of charge, allows visitors to create fabric pouches using traditional minhwa paintings. These diverse experience programs provide an opportunity to get closer to Korean traditional craft culture.
