The highly anticipated musical ‘Holy Innocent’ is set to open next month, drawing inspiration from the original novel that served as the basis for the sensational movie ‘Dreamers’. With its beautiful set designs and captivating music, the musical aims to portray the journey of young individuals navigating the waves of revolution towards a future filled with hope.
The musical ‘Holy Innocent’, organized by PAGE 1, will be performed at the Link Art Center Dream 1 in Seoul from next month’s 27th until December 8th. During this period, audiences will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the story of three young individuals who, amidst the chaos of their time, meet as if by fate and embark on a journey of dreams and personal growth.
‘Holy Innocent’ takes place against the backdrop of the 1968 French Revolution in Paris. The musical vividly reenacts the period starting from February to May 1968, when the French government dismissed Henri Langlois, who had contributed to the development of cinema by establishing the Cinémathèque Française. Through the conflicts and reconciliation of the characters within the chaotic space and time, the musical portrays their values, beliefs, and the transformative process they undergo.
Unlike the movie ‘Dreamers’, which garnered attention for its mesmerizing and provocative depiction, the musical ‘Holy Innocent’ shifts its focus to the conflicts and aspirations of immature youth as they navigate the path towards a better world. Through the struggles these young individuals face in pursuit of their ideals, the musical aims to dramatically portray their journey of growth.
The element of ‘film’ in the story serves as a connection between the characters, paying homage to the Nouvelle Vague movement that adorned the French cinema scene in the 1950s and 1960s. It provides a glimpse into the free-spirited, independent thinking of the youth at that time, their ability to break boundaries, and their pursuit of artistic innovation. The musical utilizes these artistic elements to offer the audience a deeper and more immersive experience.
The role of Matthew, a curious and pure American student who loves the movie ‘Dreamers’, will be played by Yoo Hyun-seok, Yoon Eun-oh, and Choi Jae-woong. Theo, who is enraged by the injustices of society and challenges traditional values, will be portrayed by Yoon Seung-woo, Moon Yu-kang, and Kim Jae-han. The character Isabel, known for her strong personality and free-spirited nature, will be brought to life by Jung Woo-yeon, Sun Yu-ha, and Lee Eun-jeong.
‘Holy Innocent’ will explore the ideals and realities of youth through its enchanting set designs and captivating music. The musical aims to vividly convey the conflicts and growth process of young individuals as they pursue their dreams, providing the audience with an opportunity to deeply resonate with the pain and hope of the era.
In essence, the musical ‘Holy Innocent’ holds a significance beyond a mere performance. Against the historical backdrop of the 1968 French Revolution, it tells a story of young individuals who, in their pursuit of ideals, face conflicts and undergo personal growth, leaving a profound impact on the audience. Through this musical, audiences can bridge the past and present, embracing a sense of hope for a better world.
