In celebration of Chuseok, the traditional Korean harvest festival, the Public Procurement Service (PPS) is hosting the “Government Procurement Cultural Product Exhibition” in Insadong, Seoul. The exhibition will take place from the 11th to the 15th of September at the Korean Art Museum’s Exhibition Halls 1 and 2 in Insadong, a street known for its traditional culture.
The exhibition aims to promote and explore traditional cultural products, showcasing a wide range of products that have been reinterpreted in a modern context. These products include traditional musical instruments such as gayageum, haegeum, and buk, as well as daily necessities like traditional Korean fans, ceramic tumblers with Korean alphabets, and silk scarves featuring Korean consonants.
The exhibition will feature over 140 traditional artworks, including sculptures made of silver and ceramic paintings depicting traditional motifs like phoenixes and tigers. This diverse collection of government procurement cultural products provides an opportunity for visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Korean traditional culture and experience the country’s cultural heritage firsthand.
PPS plans to gather feedback from visitors during the exhibition to expand the range of traditional cultural products and utilize consumer opinions in developing new product ideas. This effort aims to create high-quality traditional cultural products that meet the demands of consumers.
Since 1999, PPS has been selecting excellent traditional craft products as “Government Procurement Cultural Products” through a biannual evaluation process, supporting artisans in their efforts to pass down and create traditional cultural heritage. These initiatives contribute to the continuous development of Korean traditional culture.
PPS plans to secure additional funding next year to continue the exploration of traditional cultural products and organize various media and exhibitions. They will actively promote market expansion by supporting the installation and operation of traditional cultural product exhibition halls during local events. These plans aim to increase the value of traditional cultural products and reach a wider consumer base.
Im Gi-geun, the head of PPS, expressed his hopes that the exhibition in Insadong would impress participants with the beauty and elegance of Korean traditional cultural products. He emphasized that the event, supported by PPS, traditional cultural heritage bearers, and the public, would serve as a catalyst for the discovery of new traditional cultural products and the expansion of domestic and international markets.
The “Government Procurement Cultural Product Exhibition” in Insadong is an opportunity to showcase the combination of traditional Korean culture and modern design through a diverse range of products. It aims to reevaluate the value of traditional culture and promote Korean cultural heritage to a wider audience. The exhibition is expected to bring joy and inspiration to many people during the Chuseok festival.
