South Korean Official Promises Support for Marriage of Unmarried Men and Women

Deputy Chairman Ju Hyeong-hwan of the National Assembly’s Committee on Low Birthrate and Aging Society recently visited Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, where he announced that the government will provide support for the marriage of unmarried men and women. He emphasized the importance of allowing young men and women to marry without worries and stated that the country will offer assistance in this regard.

Purpose of the Temple Stay Program

The temple stay program, organized in collaboration with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Social Welfare Foundation and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, aims to address the low birthrate issue. This program provides an opportunity for unmarried men and women to get to know each other through conversations and recreational activities during a 2-day stay. Deputy Chairman Ju Hyeong-hwan expressed his hope that these encounters will lead to meaningful connections and conveyed a message of encouragement to the participants.

High Competition and Participants

A total of 20 unmarried men and women in their 30s participated in the Naksansa Temple stay, surpassing a highly competitive selection process. Deputy Chairman Ju Hyeong-hwan mentioned the high competition and expressed both joy and a sense of responsibility, stating, “We still have hope, and we feel a heavy responsibility that we must do well.”

Personal Choices and the Role of the Government

While acknowledging that meeting a life partner is a highly personal matter, Deputy Chairman Ju Hyeong-hwan emphasized the role of the government in removing various obstacles and providing support. He expressed his desire to make marriage and childbirth joyful experiences filled with anticipation and happiness.

He encouraged the participants, saying, “I hope that your encounters at the temple can lead to meaningful relationships and connections.”
