The election nomination process has commenced as the ruling party, 국민의힘 (People Power Party), and the main opposition party, 더불어민주당 (Democratic Party of Korea), gear up for a fierce competition.
The ruling party, 국민의힘, has initiated the nomination process by conducting interviews starting from today. The interviews will continue for a week, concluding on the 17th of the month. The first round of interviews will take place in Seoul, Jeju, and Gwangju, while the final interviews will be held in Gangwon, Ulsan, Busan, and Daegu, which are strongholds for the ruling party.
The ruling party is considering nominating Lee Won-mo, a former presidential secretary, in a challenging district in Gyeonggi Province. Additionally, they have approached In Yo-han, the former Innovation Committee Chairman, to run in Seoul Seodaemun-gu.
The main opposition party, 더불어민주당, plans to inform the bottom 20% of incumbent lawmakers about their reduced chances in the nomination process. The party’s nomination committee will notify 31 candidates about their decreased prospects.
There is a growing conflict within the main opposition party as candidates affiliated with the pro-Moon faction, such as 친문 (pro-Moon) and 친명 (pro-Lee Jae-myung), vie for nominations. This internal dispute may lead to further divisions and potential defections within the party.
The nomination process marks a crucial phase in the lead-up to the elections. As the ruling and opposition parties compete for nominations, tensions rise, and the political landscape becomes increasingly dynamic. The outcomes of the nomination process will shape the political landscape and set the stage for a fierce electoral battle.
