During the Lunar New Year holiday, museums in South Korea are offering a wide range of traditional experiences and performances for visitors to immerse themselves in the energy of the Blue Dragon. From January 11th to 12th, various events will take place at different museums, allowing people to celebrate the auspicious Gabyeon Year.

National Folk Museum

The National Folk Museum is hosting the “2024 Gabyeon Year Lunar New Year Festival” where visitors born in the Year of the Dragon will receive a special gift containing the energy of the Blue Dragon. Additionally, a special exhibition titled “龍, Soaring” will be on display, and visitors who discover the Blue Dragon within the exhibition will receive a calendar as a token. Everyone can also receive a special Lunar New Year envelope symbolizing good luck.

The festival at the National Folk Museum offers various experiences such as making traditional crafts like the Blue Dragon kite, Blue Dragon calligraphy, and Gabyeon Year four-panel folding screens. Visitors can also enjoy traditional games like Yutnori and witness performances like the “Village Welcoming Ceremony” that wishes for peace and prosperity.

Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum provides opportunities for participants to make traditional crafts like Sehwa (traditional Korean paper) and Bokjumeoni (a lucky bag). Participants can register online in advance to secure a spot for these hands-on experiences.

National Folk Museum in Paju

The National Folk Museum in Paju is also hosting a Lunar New Year event, featuring the exhibition “Stories of Lunar New Year Heard by the Treasure Chest.” Visitors can immerse themselves in Lunar New Year stories and participate in activities related to the Gabyeon Year. Additionally, there will be an event called “Find the Dragon in the Museum’s Collection” where visitors can discover hidden dragon characters in the museum’s collection and share them on social media.

Seoul Museum of History

The Seoul Museum of History is organizing the “Lunar New Year Festival” on January 11th, showcasing various performances including traditional music, dance, and drumming. Visitors can watch Bongsan Talchum (a mask dance) and even try on masks themselves. Other activities like archery, hitting a large stick with rice cakes, and arrow throwing are also available. Children can easily learn archery using animal-shaped targets.

Visitors can also write their New Year’s wishes and take commemorative photos with their families at the photo zone.
