A sound play adaptation of the Chinese classic ‘Dua-won,’ titled ‘Dua: Yoo-wol’s Eyes,’ has gained popularity among audiences. This production, which reimagines the 13th-century Chinese classic, revolves around the protagonist Dua, who, after being left by his father and entrusted to an old man, experiences a harsh fate and a tragic ending. Through Dua’s journey, the play delivers a message of comfort to those who have been treated unfairly.
Kim Ga-eul, known for her participation in MBN’s ‘Joseon Star’ as part of the fusion traditional music group ‘Queen’ and the traditional music group ‘Sori Kkot-ga-gak-dan,’ portrays the strong-willed female character Dua. Additionally, vocalists Jeong Geon-ho, acclaimed for his role as ‘Hang-woo’ in the National Changgeuk Company’s ‘Paewangbyeolhui,’ takes on the role of Dua’s father, Doo-cheon-jang. Other cast members include Song Bo-ra as Chae-no-pa, Seo Eo-jin as Jang-ryeo-a, Lee Na-ra as Jang-ryeo-a’s father, and Lee Jae-hyun as Sae-no. Lee Na-ra’s specialization in Seodo Minyo adds another layer of richness to the production. The vocalists actively participate in the creative process, using their own voices and storytelling to advance the narrative.
The play was developed by the group ‘Taru,’ which combines traditional arts with a contemporary sensibility. It was directed by Seo Jeong-wan and written by Kim Han-sol. Supported by the long-term creation funding program of the Korea Arts and Culture Promotion Council, the play had its first performance at the Yeongdeungpo Art Hall in 2022. ‘Dua: Yoo-wol’s Eyes’ has garnered attention as a ‘well-made’ production that unlocks the traditional elements of our sound through a modern reinterpretation of a Chinese classic.
The performance takes place at the National Jeongdong Theater’s Seesil Hall, with a redesigned stage to emphasize the distinctive nature of the storytelling by the vocalists, reminiscent of wandering theater troupes. Additionally, composer Son Da-hye has joined the production, expanding the number of musicians to four. It is hoped that this performance will bring our sound closer to a wider audience. The performance will run from March 12th to March 22nd at the National Jeongdong Theater’s Seesil Hall.
Jeong Seong-suk, the representative of the National Jeongdong Theater, stated, “The sound play ‘Dua: Yoo-wol’s Eyes,’ which has undergone a solid creative process, is once again meeting audiences through the ‘Creation-ing’ project. We hope that through this performance, our sound will reach even more people.”
