The National Library of Korea has announced plans to enhance the competence and professionalism of library staff by organizing a librarian education training course in 2024. This initiative aims to strengthen the job competency and expertise of library staff across the country.
In order to achieve this goal, the National Library of Korea will kickstart the librarian education training course by conducting a series of activities this year. These activities include the organization of a seminar on developing library talents and the establishment of a librarian learning community linked to the education curriculum.
On March 29th, a seminar on developing library talents will be held under the theme of “Challenges and Strategies for Libraries in the Era of Super Artificial Intelligence.” Esteemed speakers, including Ha Jeong-woo, the head of Naver Future AI Center, and professors Baek Gyeong-jae from Dongduk Women’s University and Lee Cheol-nam from Chungnam National University, will discuss the impact and prospects of AI on libraries.
The librarian learning community, which will be piloted from March, aims to provide a platform for autonomous learning and research for library staff. This community will consist of teams of 6-8 members, with a total of 3 teams being selected through a rigorous evaluation process.
In addition to the seminar and learning community, the National Library of Korea will develop a training program specifically designed to enhance librarians’ data utilization capabilities. This program will equip librarians with the skills to collect, manage, analyze, and visualize data in the era of technological advancements.
Recognizing the diverse needs of library professionals, the National Library of Korea will also offer specialized training programs on various topics such as copyright, library marketing strategies, and library and media literacy. These programs will be tailored to the specific needs, job roles, and experience levels of the participants.
Furthermore, the National Library of Korea will provide e-learning courses, including micro-learning courses, to cater to the learning preferences of the MZ generation.
Since 1983, the National Library of Korea has been at the forefront of librarian education and training, offering over 100 education courses annually to enhance the competence and professionalism of library staff nationwide. Their efforts contribute to the continuous growth and development of library professionals, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and knowledge exchange within the library field.
