South Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration Launches Shuttle Bus Service to Korean Empire Consulate General in Washington, D.C.

The Cultural Heritage Administration of South Korea has announced the commencement of a shuttle bus service to the Korean Empire Consulate General in Washington, D.C. The service, known as “Visiting the Korean Empire Consulate General in the United States,” will run from this month until November, catering to Korean nationals residing in the Washington, D.C. area.

Historical Significance of the Korean Empire Consulate General

The Korean Empire Consulate General, a building that was utilized as a consulate during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire era, holds immense historical value. Acquired in 1891, the building remained in use until it was forcibly sold to Japan in 1910. However, in 2012, the Cultural Heritage Administration purchased the consulate general and embarked on a comprehensive restoration and remodeling project. In May 2018, the building reopened as a historical exhibition hall, showcasing the rich history of Korea. Today, it stands as a prominent “K-Shared Heritage” site.

Enhancing Accessibility and Cultural Exchange

As of the end of last year, the Korean Empire Consulate General had welcomed a total of 22,270 visitors, including 13,371 Korean nationals and 6,899 foreigners. To further enhance accessibility and promote cultural exchange, the Cultural Heritage Administration has collaborated with the Overseas Cultural Heritage Foundation’s U.S. Office, the Washington Korean Community Center, and the Washington Regional Council of the Korean-American Association.

Shuttle Bus Service and “Discovering Korea in the United States” Program

The shuttle bus service will operate on the second Wednesday and Saturday of each month, from February to November, catering to Korean nationals residing in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas. In addition, the Cultural Heritage Administration will conduct the “Discovering Korea in the United States” program in May and October, including a visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Participants of the program will have the opportunity to explore the Korean Empire Consulate General, as well as the Seo Jae-pil Memorial Hall and other historical sites in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. Both the shuttle bus service and the program are offered free of charge, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to experiencing Korean cultural heritage.

Promoting Cultural Heritage and International Cooperation

The collaboration between the Cultural Heritage Administration and various organizations reflects the commitment to preserve and share Korean cultural heritage. This initiative not only fosters a deeper understanding of Korean history and culture but also strengthens international cooperation in the preservation of cultural heritage.

Overall, the launch of the shuttle bus service and the “Discovering Korea in the United States” program signifies the Cultural Heritage Administration’s dedication to enhancing accessibility, promoting cultural exchange, and providing a comprehensive cultural experience for Korean nationals living abroad.
