Public Dialogue Between Artists and Judges Revealed, Offering Glimpse into the Future of South Korean Contemporary Art

In an effort to improve the “Artist of the Year” award system, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in South Korea has announced the public release of the “Artist and Judge Dialogue.” This dialogue, set to take place on February 6th at the museum’s Seoul Multi-Space, aims to provide a transparent platform for artists and judges to engage in meaningful discussions.

Four Sponsored Artists and Four International Judges Participating

The dialogue will feature the participation of four sponsored artists and four international judges. The selected artists, Kwon Byung-jun, Gala Porras-Kim, Lee Kang-seung, and Jeon So-jeong, have been nominated as candidates for the “2023 Artist of the Year” award.

Enhancing Contemporary Art and Improving the Award System

The “Artist and Judge Dialogue” is part of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s ongoing efforts to foster contemporary art and improve the “Artist of the Year” award system. The dialogue aims to provide an opportunity for artists to share insights into their artistic worlds and previous works, while also engaging in a question and answer session with both domestic and international judges. Additionally, selected questions from the audience will be posed to the artists by exhibition curators.

Application Closed within Two Hours

The application process for participating in the dialogue was conducted online through the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s website. Within just two hours, all 250 available seats were filled, demonstrating the high level of interest and engagement from the public.

Kim Sung-hee, the director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, believes that the “Artist and Judge Dialogue” will contribute to the transparency and development of the “Artist of the Year” award system.
