대원씨아이, the company that achieved success with the webtoon ‘Slam Dunk,’ has struck gold again with another powerful weapon, earning 500 million won in just two weeks. The company’s paper comic book publication has decreased to 1/100th of its early 1990s level, but the company’s size continues to grow in an upward trajectory. Hwang Min-ho, the CEO of 대원씨아이, emphasized that the statement “the comic publishing industry is in crisis” is not entirely true, stating, “However, if you look closely at the industry, it is not a declining sector.”
Through strengthening online content, including webtoons, 대원씨아이 is projected to achieve a 31.5% increase in revenue, reaching 4.8 billion won in 2022 compared to the previous year. While the number of paper comic book publications has decreased, online content now accounts for 53% of the company’s total revenue.
대원씨아이 has successfully transitioned to online content through webtoons. Established in 1992, 대원씨아이 diversified its business portfolio through webtoon production, both online and offline. In 2022, online content accounted for 53% of the company’s total revenue. CEO Hwang Min-ho stated, “The success of 대원씨아이’s webtoons lies in consistency. By consistently uploading high-quality webtoons, we have been able to steadily increase our revenue.”
대원씨아이 turned ‘Slam Dunk’ into a new format, making it a work in progress. This allowed them to continue their licensing agreement with the original Japanese publisher. 대원씨아이 continued to innovate with new formats, leading to increased sales. Furthermore, the release of the film ‘The First Slam Dunk’ last year resulted in the sale of over one million copies of the Slam Dunk comic book, bringing positive developments for the company.
대원씨아이 places great importance on the ‘1물 N가’ business model. CEO Hwang Min-ho explained, “It is important to create products with diverse values, even if it is only one content.” 대원씨아이 achieved significant sales through crowdfunding of merchandise combined with their content. Additionally, they plan to expand the ‘1물 N가’ model through their subsidiary, 해담이엔티.
해담이엔티 operates 비온카페 and plans to open 해온카페 2nd branch. 대원씨아이 is expected to become Korea’s largest content specialist, not just a publishing company.
