Google CEO Warns of Job Cuts Due to Ambitious Goals

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has issued a warning to employees about potential job reductions as the company pursues its ambitious goals. In a recent memo titled “2024 Priorities and the Year Ahead,” Pichai emphasized the need for workforce reductions in light of Google’s increased focus on new technologies, particularly AI.

Pichai acknowledged the difficulty of witnessing the impact of layoffs on colleagues and teams but stressed the importance of streamlining operations and increasing efficiency to achieve the company’s ambitious objectives. While specific details about the affected teams were not disclosed, Pichai assured employees that the scale of job cuts would be smaller than the previous year.

Furthermore, Pichai mentioned that Google will soon share its AI goals and key results (OKRs) to provide further clarity on the company’s direction. This announcement follows a series of job cuts that Google has implemented since January last year, resulting in a 6% reduction in the company’s global workforce. In September, even the hiring team faced layoffs.

Alphabet Continues Workforce Reductions

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has also been implementing job reductions this year. Approximately 1,000 employees across various teams, including Pixel smartphones, hardware, advertising, services, and YouTube, have been laid off.
