Foxconn, a leading Taiwanese technology manufacturer, has partnered with Indian software and engineering company HCL Group to establish a venture for chip packaging and testing in India. The collaboration, disclosed in regulatory documents submitted to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, involves a contract worth $37.2 million.
As part of the collaboration, Foxconn’s subsidiary, Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development, plans to acquire a 40% stake in the joint venture with HCL Group. The partnership aims to foster an ecosystem for the Indian industry and strengthen supply chain resilience.
Foxconn, which is responsible for manufacturing 68% of iPhones in India, seeks to diversify its business beyond EMS/ODM companies. The collaboration with HCL Group allows Foxconn to transition to new markets and solidify its position in India’s evolving semiconductor ecosystem.
Past controversies surrounding labor conditions in Foxconn’s Chinese factories prompted the company to relocate production to India. In line with this strategy, Foxconn has committed to investing $500 million in Telangana, India, to establish a manufacturing facility for Apple AirPods.
While Foxconn faced obstacles in its India expansion plan following the withdrawal from a joint investment with Vedanta Group, the partnership with HCL Group has put the company back on track. The establishment of the chip packaging and testing venture (OSAT) presents a more achievable investment, enabling Foxconn to enter the Indian market with lower barriers.
The collaboration between Foxconn and HCL Group not only supports the growth of India’s domestic chip ecosystem but also aligns with the Indian government’s efforts to enhance the country’s technological development. The government’s support and incentives facilitate HCL Group’s expansion and diversification in the semiconductor sector, contributing to India’s goal of becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing.
Foxconn’s investment in India signifies its commitment to expanding its business and establishing a stronger foothold in the global chip market. The collaboration with HCL Group promotes innovation, technological advancement, and job creation in India.
These strategic moves highlight the increasing significance of India as a key player in the semiconductor industry.
