The growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) raises an important question that remains unanswered: does AI provide tangible value to users? Amidst the trend-driven frenzy surrounding AI, doubts are being raised about the true benefits it brings to our lives.
While tech companies heavily promote the integration of AI into their products, it is crucial to assess whether these advancements genuinely serve human interests. Is the rush to adopt AI driven by its true usefulness, or is it merely a pursuit of the latest trend? This question sheds light on both the current technological landscape and the future of AI in 2024.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showcases a plethora of AI-powered devices, leading some analysts to dub it an “AI tsunami.” From chatbots in cars to AI-based grills and even smart toothbrushes, artificial intelligence is becoming ubiquitous. Google, in particular, is preparing to launch a new version of its assistant driven by AI technology.
While the new assistant version focuses on tasks like essay writing and image generation, concerns have been raised about its reliability and accessibility. Users question the necessity of platform-level text and image generators when similar features already exist in various apps and Android keyboards. There are also worries that essential assistant functions may be overshadowed, leading to reduced accessibility.
The AI trend extends beyond CES and Google. Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy S24 series, emphasizing AI capabilities. Microsoft is rebranding its Android web browser and keyboard app, highlighting AI integration. Even apps unrelated to AI are changing their names to “AI apps” without significant changes.
While AI possesses practical value, the current obsession with generative AI chatbots and labeling everything as an “AI app” reflects past exaggerated technology trends. Metaverse, Bitcoin, and blockchain all experienced similar hype and eventually faded away. However, AI offers more substance. Nevertheless, the focus on marketing advantages rather than user benefits is evident.
Looking ahead, it is crucial for Android organizations to go beyond the AI frenzy and refocus on features that genuinely improve users’ lives. Users seek thoughtful and practical tools rather than generating mundane text or eerie images. The goal should be to bring meaningful changes to users’ everyday experiences, irrespective of the current AI trends.
