The defense ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan have emphasized the need to strengthen security cooperation to address the heightened threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. During an international conference held in Seoul, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik highlighted the seriousness of North Korea’s development, stating that it poses a significant threat not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to global security.
Minister Shin revealed that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has openly threatened to completely destroy South Korea using all available means and capabilities. He also highlighted the strengthening military cooperation between China, Russia, and North Korea, underscoring the importance of enhancing the trilateral alliance between South Korea, the United States, and Japan.
The Defense Minister further pointed out that North Korea’s continuous provocations, such as violating the 9.19 military agreement and conducting coastal artillery firing within the no-fly zone, are exacerbating the crisis. In response, he called for increased security measures and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to address these challenges.
Minister Shin emphasized South Korea’s active pursuit of peace through value-sharing with allied countries, particularly the United States. He highlighted the significant progress in the deployment of U.S. strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula and the effectiveness of the U.S.-South Korea nuclear consultations in enhancing deterrence against North Korea.
Furthermore, Minister Shin mentioned that the trilateral security cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan has significantly strengthened, with real-time sharing of North Korean missile information and joint military exercises. He expressed the commitment to further develop this trilateral security cooperation in various fields.
Minister Shin described the South Korea-U.S. alliance as a model case of international solidarity based on universal values and principles. The conference was attended by former South Korean Defense Ministers, former Foreign Ministers, and former Unification Ministers, as well as prominent figures from both countries.
As the security situation on the Korean Peninsula continues to evolve, South Korea remains dedicated to fostering peace and stability through strong trilateral cooperation with its allied countries. The call for enhanced security measures by the South Korean Defense Minister reflects the seriousness of the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities and underscores the importance of regional collaboration in addressing these challenges.
