MMCA Publishes Books on Nam June Paik’s “Dadaikseon” Preservation and Restoration

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) has released two books documenting the preservation and restoration of Nam June Paik’s renowned artwork, “Dadaikseon.” The publications, titled “1003+1 MMCA Nam June Paik Dadaikseon Preservation and Restoration Record” and “My Nam June Paik: Memory, Preservation, Dissemination,” aim to disseminate Paik’s artistic achievements both domestically and internationally.

The book chronicles the three-year journey of preserving, restoring, and reactivating “Dadaikseon” from 2020 to 2022. Comprising approximately 600 pages, it is divided into 1003+1 sections, detailing the meticulous process. During the restoration, 737 damaged monitors were repaired or replaced, while 266 monitors were transformed with new LCD displays while preserving their original appearance. Additionally, power and cooling systems were upgraded to enhance the artwork’s preservation environment. Furthermore, eight video artworks were digitally converted and restored. Following the completion of the preservation treatment, a six-month test operation was conducted to assess the artwork’s condition and plan for future operations.

“My Nam June Paik: Memory, Preservation, Dissemination”

The MMCA also published a research book as a result of the international symposium “My Nam June Paik.” This comprehensive work, authored by 11 renowned researchers, delves deeper into Paik’s artistic achievements and influence. By synthesizing the symposium’s outcomes, the book offers a profound exploration of Paik’s artistic legacy, appealing to both domestic and international audiences.

The MMCA’s project on Nam June Paik aims to ensure the stable operation of “Dadaikseon” by continuously monitoring and preserving the artwork. The published books will be available in the MMCA’s libraries in Seoul and Gwacheon, facilitating access for researchers and experts worldwide. Through these initiatives, the MMCA seeks to promote awareness of Nam June Paik’s artistic contributions and secure his enduring legacy.
