South Korean Copyright Protection Agency Introduces Advanced System to Combat Infringement of K-Content in Foreign Languages

The Korean Copyright Protection Agency has announced the implementation of a new system to monitor and respond to the illegal distribution of K-content in foreign languages. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to eliminate the unauthorized dissemination of Korean content and protect the rights of copyright holders.

According to the Korean Copyright Protection Agency, as of November 2022, the estimated scale of illegally distributed Hallyu content overseas amounts to approximately 470 million cases. However, identifying cases of copyright infringement in foreign languages has proven to be challenging, making it difficult for copyright holders to take direct action due to language barriers.

An Innovative Solution: Foreign Language Infringement Information Collection System

In response to these challenges, the Korea Internet Promotion Agency has developed an advanced system for collecting infringement information in foreign languages. This cutting-edge system enables real-time monitoring of copyright infringement and provides comprehensive support for infringement response.

The system focuses primarily on addressing the illegal reproduction of Korean content on websites that offer services in foreign languages such as English and Chinese. Its main objective is to empower copyright holders to swiftly and effectively respond to infringements.

Support and Assistance for Copyright Owners

Copyright holders who wish to protect their works overseas can utilize the reporting site provided by the Korean Copyright Protection Agency (https://copy112.kcopa.or.kr). Through this platform, copyright holders can request protection for their works, verify the presence of infringement, and seek the agency’s support in requesting the removal of infringing content.

Fostering a Healthy Distribution Environment

Park Jeong-ryeol, the director of the Korea Content Promotion Agency, emphasizes the agency’s commitment to creating a healthy distribution environment for K-content. In South Korea, a comprehensive system is already in place, encompassing real-time monitoring, review processes, corrective recommendations, and access blocking, to effectively respond to copyright infringement.
