Seoul, South Korea – Gayageum performer Park Sun-ju has recently unveiled her latest music video for ‘Urban Sanjo.’ This captivating video showcases a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Korean instrumental music known as ‘Sanjo,’ capturing the essence of 21st-century urban life.
The album, ‘Urban Sanjo,’ features a collection of original compositions that draw inspiration from the rhythmic patterns and sounds scattered throughout the bustling cityscape of modern-day Korea.
Two tracks from the album, ‘Guun’ and ‘Black Harbor,’ were selected for production as music videos through the support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Cultural Arts and Culture Department’s 2023 Korean Traditional Music Media Content Competition. ‘Guun’ represents the scattered people, buildings, and the fluctuating heights of nine clouds in the Seoul city skyline, drawing inspiration from Kim Man-jung’s literary work ‘Guunmong.’ On the other hand, ‘Black Harbor’ captures the ambiance of the port city of Busan, musically expressing the darkened harbor lights.
Park Sun-ju is dedicated to creating innovative and collaborative works that showcase the versatility and evolution of the Gayageum. Her groundbreaking work in the genre of puppetry and Gayageum fusion earned her the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award this year.
The music video for ‘Urban Sanjo’ by Park Sun-ju can be viewed on the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Government – OnTact Korean Traditional Music Week’ YouTube channel.
