South Korean Parties Clash Over Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Law Ahead of General Elections

The ruling party questioned whether the Democratic Party’s pursuit of the special prosecutor law aimed to conceal unlawful acts by past and present party leaders or if it was merely a political weapon for the upcoming elections. They also criticized the Democratic Party for prioritizing the special prosecutor law over crucial budget negotiations, claiming that their persistent impeachment efforts and political campaigns only heightened public fatigue and frustration.

Opposition Party’s Response

On the other hand, the Democratic Party’s spokesperson, Kang Seon-woo, demanded transparency from the ruling party during a parliamentary briefing. Kang urged the ruling party to provide evidence to support their claim that no one has ever yielded to their demands or would in the future. The Democratic Party emphasized that the Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Law was a mandate from the people and called for its immediate acceptance.

Kang, the Democratic Party’s spokesperson, questioned the ruling party’s intentions, asking why the bill processing was delayed and suggesting that the ruling party manipulated the timing of the law’s handling using the elections. Furthermore, the Democratic Party’s deputy spokesperson, Seo Yong-ju, criticized the ruling party for using the elections as a means to manipulate the timing of the special prosecutor law’s processing, asserting that the issue could have been resolved before December if the ruling party had not opposed it.
