Discover the Journey of Taekwondo’s History at the National Taekwondo Museum

The Taekwondo Promotion Foundation is organizing a special exhibition at the National Taekwondo Museum, titled “The Journey of Black and White,” to shed light on the history of Taekwondo. This exhibition aims to provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the development of Taekwondo from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Three Distinct Journeys of Taekwondo

The exhibition, “The Journey of Black and White,” will explore three significant phases in the history of Taekwondo. The first journey focuses on the early days when Taekwondo was practiced as an unarmed martial art, featuring demonstrations at nine different locations. The second journey highlights the transformation of Taekwondo into a sport and its organizational development. Lastly, the exhibition showcases the initial stages of Taekwondo’s international expansion and globalization.

Valuable Materials and Photographs

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to view a wide range of valuable materials, photographs, and videos that depict the history of Taekwondo. Notable items include the poster from the 5th Changmugwan Martial Arts Competition in 1955, a group photo of the Vietnamese Taekwondo demonstration team in 1959, the monthly magazine “Muye Sibo” from the Korean Watermelon Martial Arts Society in 1960, and a photo book showcasing the “Palgwae Poomsae” by Master Hong Jeong-pyo, a former member of the YMCA Boxing Department, in 1967.

Preserving the Black and White History of Taekwondo

According to Mr. Lee Jong-gab, the acting director of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, this exhibition symbolizes the black and white era of Taekwondo’s history, representing the era’s symbolism, records, nostalgia, and memories captured in black and white photographs. The exhibition aims to preserve the authenticity and integrity of Taekwondo while elevating its global recognition. Mr. Lee also expressed the foundation’s commitment to contributing to the globalization of Taekwondo.
