North Korea has launched a scathing criticism against South Korea, accusing them of displaying an “ostentatious attitude” and succumbing to fear. The criticism comes amidst heightened tensions between the two nations. In a recent commentary published by the state-run media outlet, Chosun Central News Agency, North Korea cited the recent statements made by South Korea’s military leadership and the joint military exercises conducted with the United States as evidence of their apprehension. The commentary likened South Korea’s response to that of a barking dog that becomes louder when frightened.
The critique was also featured in the North Korean Labor Party’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, where South Korea was accused of contributing to the “US-ROK Combined Forces Command” and obeying the “US-ROK alliance.” Furthermore, North Korea condemned South Korea for participating in joint special operations and scientific warfare exercises, even amidst the worsening security situation on the Korean Peninsula.
In response to North Korea’s provocations, General Kim Myung-soo, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mentioned the possibility of “retaliation,” while Defense Minister Shin Won-sik emphasized the principle of responding “immediately, strongly, and to the end” when dealing with North Korea.
On the eve of the 12th anniversary of Kim Jong-il’s death, North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the East Sea. This marks the first missile launch in 25 days since November 22nd. According to a statement released by the Chosun Central News Agency, the missile launch was described as a response to the results of the US-ROK Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting and the arrival of the US nuclear-powered submarine USS Missouri (SSN-780) in Busan.
North Korea deemed the outcome of the NCG meeting as a “nuclear confrontation declaration.” A spokesperson expressed concern about the precarious situation created by the arrival of the USS Missouri and emphasized the need for a more proactive response. They also stressed that the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula is no longer a matter of possibility, but rather a matter of timing.
The recent series of events highlight the escalating tension between North and South Korea. The criticism from North Korea and the missile launch serve as reminders of the vulnerability of the region. The deployment of US nuclear strategic assets and North Korea’s response further exacerbate the security situation on the Korean Peninsula.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to alleviate tensions. The international community should closely monitor the situation and make concerted efforts to promote stability in the region.
