The book “2000년생이 온다” by author Lim Hong-taek, which analyzes the MZ generation through the lens of the ’90s generation, has been released. The MZ generation, commonly associated with those born in the 2000s, is significantly smaller in population compared to the ’90s generation, with only 4.96 million births. They are the first generation of the low birth rate era, growing up in a digital environment from birth.
The MZ generation has always lived their lives with the goal of minimizing failure and making rational decisions based on the abundance of information available to them. As a result, we are now witnessing an unexpected future alongside the predicted labor shortage – the emergence of non-corporate individuals. The popularity of 9th grade civil servant positions, which was once high, has diminished.
The MZ generation does not prefer the traditional 5-day work week, not because they undervalue labor income, but because they believe that continuing with a traditional job does not provide a solution. Small and medium-sized enterprises offer short-term jobs with wages that are not significantly different from long-term employment. Owning a house has become nearly impossible, even with a lifelong career.
The MZ generation faces uncertainty in long-term planning due to the flexible nature of employment. The average lifespan is increasing, but individuals may not receive adequate returns from the national pension they contribute to each month. In light of these circumstances, the MZ generation is actively devising rational survival strategies. Just as marriage and childbirth have become choices rather than necessities, the same applies to their approach to traditional employment.
By examining the demands, words, and actions of the MZ generation, we can gain insights into the impact they will have on the society we live in. It is no longer sufficient to simply categorize generations in 10-year increments. The MZ generation’s unique experiences during their formative years shape their perspectives and choices, which will undoubtedly influence our current era.
As the MZ generation prepares for the future with their rational survival strategies, it is essential for us to understand their mindset and adapt to the changing dynamics they bring to society.
