Kim Dohyun and Lee Hyuk, two pianists enthralled by the melodies of Rachmaninoff’s music, delivered a phenomenal concert at Incheon Art Hall. As part of the hall’s 30th-anniversary commemoration, the ‘Incheon Art Hall Special – Rachmaninoff Series’ came to a close with two final performances in December. On December 20th, pianist Kim Dohyun took the stage, followed by Lee Hyuk on December 28th.
Kim Dohyun, known for his deep understanding of Rachmaninoff’s music, curated a selection of the composer’s piano solo pieces, presenting his unique musical style to captivate the audience. Additionally, he performed the majestic masterpiece ‘Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos, Op. 45’ in collaboration with pianist Park Jinho.
Kim Dohyun has garnered international recognition for his sharp analytical skills and exceptional performance abilities. He achieved 2nd place at the 2017 Verbier Festival Academy Bongdom Competition, received a special prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky International Music Competition Semi-Finals, and secured the runner-up position at the 2021 Peru-Chopin International Piano Competition. This year, he was selected as the resident musician of the Mapo Cultural Foundation, furthering his active performance career.
Pianist Lee Hyuk mesmerized the audience with his heartfelt interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s sonatas. One of the featured sonatas was ‘Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 28,’ inspired by Goethe’s ‘Faust.’ This piece showcased Rachmaninoff’s unique sensibility and artistic expression. Lee Hyuk also performed ‘Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36,’ a composition that harmoniously blends Rachmaninoff’s emotive and technical prowess.
Lee Hyuk’s talent has been widely recognized through various competitions. He won the Moscow Chopin Youth Competition in 2012 and became the youngest winner at the 2016 Paderewski Competition in Poland. In 2018, he achieved 3rd place at the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan and received the top prize at the Animaato Competition in France. In 2022, he accomplished a joint 1st place at the Long Thibaud-Crespin International Competition in France. This year, he made history as the first Korean to hold a solo concert under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, commemorating Bastille Day.
The special performances at Incheon Art Hall marked the grand finale of the ‘Incheon Art Hall Special – Rachmaninoff Series’ in celebration of the hall’s 30th anniversary. Kim Dohyun and Lee Hyuk’s interpretations of Rachmaninoff’s works showcased their boundless talent and passion for music, leaving a profound impression on the audience.
