Seoul City is set to host the ‘Dongji Celebration’ event in Bukchon Hanok Village, known for its winter ambiance and cultural exchange. The event, titled ‘Bukchon Dalrak: Madam’s Dongji Feast,’ will take place at the Bukchon Cultural Center on the 22nd and 23rd of this month, according to an announcement made on the 11th.
The event, held from 10 AM to 4 PM, will feature various experiences, events, and markets based on traditional customs that ward off bad luck and wish for prosperity in the coming year.
In line with the meaning of ‘Dongji,’ which involves caring for neighbors and exchanging greetings and warmth, the event aims to foster cultural exchange and provide a market for the people living in Bukchon.
The highlight of this event is the ‘Dongji Banjak’ program, where participants can make tea tables with master craftsman Lee Jong-gu, who has been practicing traditional crafts in Bukchon for over 10 years. This program is specially designed for overseas adoptees returning to Korea and foreign visitors visiting their home country in collaboration with the Overseas Adoptees Solidarity.
Other programs such as ‘Making a Boat-shaped Coin Purse,’ ‘Colorful Stone Doll Making,’ and ‘Dongji Red Bean Porridge Quiz Event’ will also be showcased. All programs, except for craft experiences, will be free of charge. For detailed information and reservations, visit the Seoul Hanok Portal website or the Bukchon Cultural Center’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook). For inquiries, contact the Bukchon Cultural Center at 02-741-1033.
Han Byung-yong, Director of Seoul City’s Housing Policy Office, expressed his hopes that visitors would experience various customs that embody the winter ambiance and warm affection of ancestors while welcoming an exciting new year in Bukchon Hanok Village ahead of Dongji and Christmas weekend.
