Renowned Mexican artist Manuel Solano, who is visually impaired, is holding his first solo exhibition in South Korea at the Perez Project Seoul in Samcheong-dong. Despite losing their sight a decade ago due to HIV-related complications, Solano’s captivating artwork continues to mesmerize viewers with its magical and enchanting qualities.
At the age of twenty-six, Solano found themselves immersed in a world of despair, grappling with their circumstances. However, instead of succumbing to hopelessness, they chose painting as an escape and a means of self-expression. Despite being unable to hold a brush, Solano relied solely on their sense of touch, using their hands to create remarkable works of art.
Solano’s artistic process is both radical and fascinating. They forego the use of canvas frames and work directly on the wall. Using pins, needles, and wire, they create lines and separate areas for coloring, bringing their unique vision to life. While they occasionally seek assistance, Solano primarily works alone, relying on their exceptional photographic memory to recall every detail.
Solano’s dedication to their art is evident in the depth and specificity of their expression, despite the challenges posed by their visual impairment. They produce fewer than ten artworks each year, a testament to their resilience and unwavering determination to convey their thoughts and emotions concretely.
Solano’s artistic journey extends beyond traditional painting, as they explore various mediums such as video and performance art. Their work has garnered attention from renowned art institutions worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where some of their pieces are permanently displayed.
Solano’s paintings emanate a “light of positivity” despite the pain and despair that shaped their artistic path. Often resembling portraits, their autobiographical works evoke a delicate yet familiar sense of connection. Solano’s intention is to evoke positive memories and prompt viewers to reflect on their own experiences.
This remarkable exhibition, primarily showcasing Solano’s latest works, will run until January 14, 2024. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the artist’s exceptional talent and immerse themselves in the captivating world of their art and resilience.
