South Korean Prosecutor Dreams of True Revenge in ‘Flower Story’

Seoul, South Korea – In his essay ‘Flower Story,’ former Seoul prosecutor Lee Sung-yoon reflects on the true meaning of revenge in our society. Comparing himself to a resilient flower, Lee expresses his determination to seek revenge with restraint and patience, even in the face of the relentless actions of ruthless individuals.

Lee, who refers to himself as a ‘flower dog,’ has recently been appointed as a research fellow at the Judicial Research and Training Institute in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province. He draws parallels between his current situation and the exile of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui to Jeju Island.

“The wind on Jeju Island, where Chusa was exiled, always blew fiercely. Even on the day my wife and I visited, the wind relentlessly reminded us of the hardships Chusa endured. Facing that wind, I reflected on my own perseverance and endurance in the face of harsh trials, much like the delicate water lily,” Lee writes.

Particularly, Lee assumes the role of a ‘flower dog’ to spend quality time with his wife, using flowers as a means of introspection and exploring the world. Just as the Western dandelion has displaced the native dandelion, the same is true for human society. Just as the native dandelion cannot grow in polluted acidic soil, a corrupted society is not a place where righteous individuals can thrive. However, like the native dandelion that continues to bloom and flourish in the wild, dedicated prosecutors with a sense of mission will not disappear. This is also the reason why I love the native dandelion, as it remains steadfast in its true essence without compromise.”

“There was a language of peace that the dandelion whispered to me. ‘I live clinging to the wall, struggling, but I hope you find the strength to do the same. The world may seem slow, but we are all moving forward, little by little,'” Lee shares.

Lee’s essay resonates with those who yearn for true revenge in our society, as he draws inspiration from the unwavering resilience of the flower dog and the endurance he has learned from it. His words serve as a reminder that revenge can be pursued with strength and patience, even in the face of adversity.
