Renowned musical actor Min Woo-hyuk recently opened up about the profound impact that the musical “Les Misérables” has had on his life. In an exclusive interview, he revealed that prior to encountering this masterpiece, he had never made any serious efforts in fields such as baseball or singing. However, everything changed when he took on the role of Enjolras in “Les Misérables,” leading him to realize that he no longer needed to give up on his dreams.
Min Woo-hyuk’s path to success has been akin to riding a roller coaster. Initially, he was highly regarded as a pitcher in the KBO League, joining the LG Twins in 2003. Unfortunately, his baseball career came to an abrupt end due to injuries. Undeterred, he embarked on a new path as a singer under the stage name “Pony,” even participating in the OST of the drama “Yojosukye” (The Night Watchman). However, after years of anonymity, he eventually decided to give up.
In 2015, with no formal education in the arts, Min Woo-hyuk mustered the courage to audition for the musical “Death Note.” Despite his efforts, he faced yet another disappointment. However, fate intervened when director Kim Moon-jung recognized his talent and offered him the opportunity to audition for the role of Enjolras in “Les Misérables.” This chance encounter became his last shot at pursuing his dreams.
Determined and unwavering, Min Woo-hyuk poured his heart and soul into the audition process. Miraculously, his efforts bore fruit, and he was cast as Enjolras. This pivotal moment became a stepping stone for him to appear in numerous other iconic musicals such as “Wicked,” “Aida,” “Rent,” “Anna Karenina,” “Jekyll & Hyde,” and “Gwangju,” captivating audiences with his exceptional talent.
Min Woo-hyuk’s success extended beyond the realm of musical theater. His appearance in the popular JTBC drama “Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim” solidified his position as a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. After an eight-year hiatus since the original production of “Les Misérables,” he returned to the stage, this time taking on the role of Jean Valjean.
During a recent meeting at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, Min Woo-hyuk expressed his gratitude for being able to portray Jean Valjean, a character he had long aspired to bring to life. He shared his feelings of astonishment, anticipation, and anxiety that accompanied the sudden opportunity. However, the overwhelming applause and thunderous applause he received from the audience during the recent performance in Busan solidified his confidence in his abilities.
“Les Misérables” not only transformed Min Woo-hyuk’s career but also his understanding of acting and approach to his craft. He realized that being an actor goes beyond showcasing charisma and charm; it involves conveying the essence of the work and touching the hearts of the audience. This newfound understanding led him to approach each role from different perspectives and levels.
The audition process for “Les Misérables” was far from easy. Over the course of eight months, Min Woo-hyuk had to master four designated songs and harmonize with his fellow actors. Despite the challenges, he ultimately secured the role of Jean Valjean, known for its raw and untamed nature.
Explaining his unconventional approach to the character, Min Woo-hyuk revealed that he deliberately chose a disheveled appearance to convey the rawness required for the role. This decision resonated with composer Cameron Mackintosh’s vision and proved to be successful.
One of the most demanding numbers for Min Woo-hyuk was “Bring Him Home,” which required him to rely on his physical stamina to deliver a powerful and emotional performance. As a former athlete, he drew upon his athleticism to bring forth the intensity and emotions needed for the song.
After securing the role, Min Woo-hyuk dedicated himself to practical music and vocal training, fully immersing himself in rigorous preparations. Jean Valjean is considered one of the most challenging roles in musical theater, requiring actors to showcase their full vocal range. Observing the dedication and efforts of senior actors who previously portrayed Jean Valjean, he felt a sense of trepidation. However, having experienced vocal cord nodules during his previous role as Enjolras, he approached the role cautiously, balancing the need to protect his vocal cords while delivering the raw and rugged performance demanded by the character.
While his previous role as Enjolras focused on sacrifice, courage, and hope, Min Woo-hyuk aims to convey love and warmth through the character of Jean Valjean. He believes that Jean Valjean’s compassion has the power to melt away the harshness of the 19th-century era depicted in the musical.
Personally, Min Woo-hyuk experienced a profound impact while portraying Jean Valjean, feeling a sense of warmth and transformation within himself. He hopes that this resonates with the audience, evoking empathy and understanding.

His journey, captivating audiences with his exceptional talent, is only just beginning. He firmly believes that his true calling lies in musical theater and feels a greater sense of responsibility towards his growing fan base.
As the final curtain call approaches, Min Woo-hyuk plans to hold back his tears, cherishing them for the last performances in Seoul and Daegu. He hopes that the emotions he pours out during those moments will serve as a testament to his dedication and the success of his performances.
Min Woo-hyuk’s transformative journey, fueled by his unyielding belief in his abilities and unwavering support from his family, has paved the way for his growth as an artist. After gaining immense popularity through his appearance in the drama “Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim,” he received a flood of offers from the broadcasting industry. However, during his run of “Les Misérables,” he remains solely focused on musical theater, considering it his true calling. He feels a deep sense of responsibility towards his expanding fan base and is committed to delivering exceptional performances.
