Lawmaker Lee Won-wook of the Democratic Party of Korea has called for disciplinary action and warnings to be issued to politicians within the pro-Jae-myung faction who have shown disrespect towards former lawmaker Choi Kang-wook. Lee made the statement on social media, highlighting the need for consequences for those who have blindly supported Choi despite his derogatory remarks and lack of self-reflection.
Lee expressed concern over the relatively swift disciplinary action taken against Choi by party leader Lee Jae-myung, stating that there have been objections and posts from members of the Blue Wave platform and Jae-myung’s village questioning the validity of Choi’s remarks. He further criticized the Democratic Party for displaying excessive kindness and tolerance towards pro-Jae-myung politicians who have been involved in controversies such as offensive comments, scandals, and unethical behavior.
Lee emphasized the importance of sincerity in overcoming the crisis of slanderous remarks and disrespect towards the public. He called for a separation from the fanatical supporters who have crossed the line, referring to them as “blind followers of Jae-myung” and “YouTube activists.” According to Lee, the first step towards sincerity is to sever ties with these individuals.
Furthermore, Lee demanded a comprehensive overhaul of the Ethics Committee, which has delayed disciplinary actions against individuals involved in controversies such as the sexual harassment case of former lawmaker Choi and the comments made by Yang Moon-seok, the chairman of the committee, who targeted lawmaker Jeon Hae-cheol. Yang’s remarks were forwarded to the Ethics Committee for review in July.
Lee Jae-myung, the party leader, imposed a six-month suspension of party membership on Choi Kang-wook.
Lee Won-wook’s call for disciplinary action against pro-Jae-myung politicians reflects growing concerns within the Democratic Party of Korea regarding ethical conduct and accountability. The controversy surrounding Choi Kang-wook’s derogatory remarks has highlighted the need for stricter measures to maintain the party’s integrity. The party’s response to these issues will shape its image and credibility among the public.
