Vatican’s Archbishop Gallagher Commemorates 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations with South Korea

The Vatican’s Paul Richard Gallagher, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Diplomatic Corps, visited South Korea to honor the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and the Vatican. A commemorative mass titled “Mass in Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Korea and the Vatican” was held at Seoul’s Cathedral.

In his sermon during the mass, Archbishop Gallagher emphasized the power of faith and dedication. He highlighted the potential for faith and dedication to bear abundant fruits for all of humanity. The importance of public service for the well-being of society as a whole was also emphasized.

Prominent Figures Attend the 60th Anniversary Mass

Several prominent figures attended the 60th-anniversary mass, including Archbishop Jeong Soon-taek, the head of the Seoul Archdiocese, and Bishop Lee Yong-hoon. Auxiliary Bishop Go Yo-bi of the Seoul Archdiocese was also present. High-ranking officials from the Vatican, such as Ivan Santos Montanari, the Undersecretary for Relations with States, and Fernando Heis Montanari, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in South Korea, graced the occasion. Representatives from around 20 countries, including Italy, Brazil, and Indonesia, also attended the mass.

Expressing Gratitude and Seeking Ongoing Cooperation

Archbishop Jeong Soon-taek expressed gratitude for the Vatican’s important role during the Korean War and continuous support for the Korean Church. He also requested the Vatican’s ongoing cooperation for the preparation of the “World Youth Day” scheduled to be held in Seoul in 2027.
