South Korean President Emphasizes Strong Partnership with the UK in Speech to British Parliament

During his state visit to the UK, President Yoon Seok-yeol delivered a speech at the Royal Gallery in Westminster Palace, declaring that South Korea and the UK are once again “global strategic partners.” President Yoon highlighted that this year, marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, is a turning point for their renewed cooperation and collaboration.

Expanding Cooperation in Various Fields

In his speech, President Yoon stated that the partnership between South Korea and the UK will greatly expand in areas such as digital technology, artificial intelligence, cyber security, nuclear power, defense, biotechnology, space, semiconductors, offshore wind power, clean energy, and marine industries. He also emphasized the need to strengthen international cooperation in countering cybercrime and addressing the threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed by North Korea.

Responding to Challenges Together

President Yoon urged both countries to respond to challenges together, highlighting South Korea’s commitment to stand with the UK and the international community in defending international norms and order against illegal invasions and provocations. He also noted the increasing defense cooperation, including the participation of the British military in this year’s joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.

Cultural Collaboration and Friendship

President Yoon emphasized that the friendship between South Korea and the UK can turn challenges into opportunities. He mentioned the cultural contributions of South Korea, including the global success of K-pop groups such as BTS and Blackpink, as well as popular TV series like “Squid Game” and the achievements of footballer Son Heung-min. This highlights the importance of cultural and artistic cooperation between the two countries.
