Paris Sees Over 100,000 Protest Against Anti-Semitism Following Israel-Hamas Conflict

More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to protest against rising anti-Semitism amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The demonstration, attended by Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne, representatives from various political parties, and far-right party leader Marine Le Pen, aimed to voice opposition to the surge in anti-Semitism fueled by the continued war between Israel and Hamas.

A Growing Concern of Anti-Semitic Acts

France, home to the largest Jewish population in Europe, has witnessed a worrisome increase in acts of anti-Semitism reminiscent of the collaboration with Nazis during World War II. The protest in Paris, which included prominent politicians like Elizabeth Bourne and Marine Le Pen, denounced violence, anti-Semitism, and all forms of political extremism infiltrating society.

A March for Unity and Solidarity

The protest saw the participation of families of the 40 French citizens who lost their lives in the initial Hamas attacks or were still held hostage. Patrick Klugman, a lawyer and member of the “Prévenir” committee, emphasized the importance of a high voter turnout to reassure the Jewish community within France.

Government Response and Promises

The French authorities have documented over 1,000 incidents targeting Jews across the country since the start of the Middle East conflict. President Emmanuel Macron, in a letter published in the newspaper “Le Parisien,” promised to prosecute and punish the perpetrators of anti-Semitic acts, stating that “France is not France when Jewish fellow citizens are afraid.” Macron called for unity, adherence to values, and efforts towards peace and security in the Middle East.

Controversy Surrounding Marine Le Pen’s Attendance

Despite her party’s history of anti-Semitism, far-right leader Marine Le Pen attended the protest, sparking criticism. Defending her presence, Le Pen argued that she and her party were in the right place. She also urged other politicians to set aside political controversies during the march.

Surge in Anti-Semitic Acts

The Ministry of the Interior reported a significant increase in anti-Semitic acts, with 1,247 incidents occurring since October 7th, 2022, nearly triple the total for the entire year. While France has imposed restrictions on pro-Palestinian demonstrations, authorized protests demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, including those held in Paris, have taken place.
